A multidisciplinary team took part in the design phases, providing cost estimating, systems evaluation and recommendations for phasing of the construction, as well as information on all major building utilities and systems to remain in operation at each phase. Overall, the $11.7 million project was separated into five major phases and multiple sub-phases. All new and renovated work was done with minimal disruptions to current operations, which allowed residents to remain on site throughout construction.
In 2003, Handmaker’s Rubin Campus was chosen as the best midsize continuing care retirement center in the country by the National Association of Home Builders. Handmaker also received one of three Arizona Masonry Guild 2003 “Silver Trowel” Awards, and was published in the 2004 American Institute of Architects Design for Aging Review.
